How National Highway Numbers Work in India
In 2010, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) completely rationalized India's National Highway numbering system based on geographic orientation and coordinates.
North-South Corridors
All highways running primarily North-South are designated with EVEN numbers (e.g., NH 44, NH 48, NH 16, NH 66). Numbers increase sequentially from East to West across the subcontinent.
East-West Corridors
All highways running East-West are designated with ODD numbers (e.g., NH 27, NH 19, NH 53). Numbers increase sequentially from North to South across India.
Subsidiary Branch Routes
Highways with 3 digits are feeder branches of the parent 2-digit highway. For example, NH 144, 244, and 344 are secondary branches connecting to NH 44.
