Every CNG-powered motor vehicle registered in India is governed by the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016 (Rule 35), codified and enforced by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Private cars require cylinder hydro-stretch testing every 3 years. Commercial transport must be tested annually.
Cylinders are water-jacket hydro-tested at 330 BAR (1.5x standard working pressure of 220 BAR) to detect permanent volumetric expansion.
Forecourts will refuse gas dispensing without a valid metal compliance plate embossed with testing station code and validity date.
The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG leads the Indian passenger market with an ARAI-certified fuel economy of 34.05 km/kg. On open 4-lane highways at a steady cruising speed of 80 km/h, verified real-world economy ranges between 30.5 and 32.0 km/kg.
Traditional single-cylinder CNG cars (Maruti Suzuki) install one large 55Lā60L tank in the trunk, occupying 60ā70% of cargo space. Dual-cylinder models (Tata iCNG, Hyundai Hy-CNG Duo) split gas capacity into two 30L cylinders under the luggage board, preserving 200L+ of flat, usable boot space.
A standard 60-liter water capacity cylinder holds approximately 8.5 to 9.2 kg of CNG at the standard regulatory forecourt dispensing pressure of 200 BAR. At lower compressor pressure (180 BAR), it accepts only 7.5 to 8.2 kg. At 220 BAR on winter mornings, capacity reaches up to 10.1 kg.
Under Rule 35 of the Gas Cylinder Rules, 2016 administered by PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization), all CNG cylinders in passenger vehicles must undergo hydrostatic re-testing every 3 years from registration date.
